In order to increase the operational safety of cable-operated transport equipment, a wear monitoring system (38) is proposed for monitoring the wear and/or tear of at least one equipment component (22, 48, 98, 100) of cable-operated transport equipment comprising a supporting and/or traction cable and/or a hoisting cable (12) and at least one drive unit (16, 106), said component being subjected to wear and/or tear and supported in a rotating and/or revolving manner, comprising a characteristic variable measuring device for measuring an actual value and/or a time-dependent actual value function of at least one electrical and/or mechanical characteristic variable of the at least one equipment component and/or of the drive unit, and comprising an evaluation device (70) for determining a characteristic variable deviation of the actual value from a target value as a function of time or a time interval, and/or a deviation of the actual value function from a time-dependent target value function of the at least one characteristic variable, wherein the characteristic variable deviation corresponds to a tear and/or wear state of the at least one equipment component.
