PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital transmission apparatus which can obtain the maximum signal to noise ratio about an uplink signal from a plurality of slave units. SOLUTION: The digital transmission apparatus is equipped with a base unit to perform bit contraction, in which n bits of digital signal transmitted from N sets of slave units 1 are extended to n+log<SB>2</SB>N bits by the corresponding bit extension portion 14 and (2<SP>n-1</SP>-1)/¾result of addition¾ computation is performed by a gain computation portion 9 on an addition result obtained by an adding portion 7. When the computation result is smaller than "1", the computation result is made to be a gain coefficient and when the computation result is larger than "1", "1" is made to be the gain coefficient. Further, the adding result is multiplied by the gain via a multiplying portion 10, and upper log<SB>2</SB>N bits except a sign bit are discarded and restored to n bits by a bit contraction portion 11.
