PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for a thermal head, capable of the occurrence of image defects such as ruled line cutting-off or nonoccurrence irrespective of types or pixel patterns of documents. SOLUTION: The controller for the thermal head is provided with a character mode key 71 and an image mode key 72 for receiving selection of a document mode, and a control unit 81 for setting, when the image mode key 72 is set, applied energy supplied to a heating body so that the boring area of a black pixel in the isolated part and the thin line of an image mode is larger than that of a black pixel in a solid part when the character mode is selected, and setting, when the character mode key 71 is selected, applied energy supplied to a heating body 21a so that the boring area of a black pixel in the isolated part of the character mode is smaller than that of a black pixel in a normal solid part.
