PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely determine a current value and lighting time for controlling the lighting operation of a light source with a simple method while securing a desired quantity of light in an image reader. SOLUTION: The light source is turned on only once without being intermittently turned on in reading in a horizontal scanning direction to secure a dynamic range. The current value of the light source is roughly adjusted based on an output value and, in addition, the lighting time is finely adjusted to secure a desired quantity of light by turning on the light source only once.
