A mobile terminal and a method for controlling an operation thereof are provided to control the operation of a mobile terminal easily by configuring the sentences related to a desirable operation even when a user does not know a menu structure. A display unit(151) displays the words that belong to a first group. When a first word is selected from the words that belong to the first group, a controller(180) displays the first word and the words that belong to a second group. When a second word is selected from the word that belongs to the second group, the controller controls the operation corresponding to the sentence in which the first and second words are combined. If there is no word that belongs to the second word, the controller controls the operation, which corresponds to the first word, to be performed.
