PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing ethanol by using a microorganism having ability for producing ethanol and belonging to the genus Veillonella. SOLUTION: The method, for producing the ethanol by introducing carbon monoxide or a synthetic gas composed of carbon dioxide and hydrogen as a substrate, and forming the ethanol by the microorganism having the ability for producing the ethanol in an anaerobic condition and belonging to the genus Veillonella, includes adding an oxidation-reduction mediator specific to the microorganism.
