PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic field generation element enabling reduced power consumption in light-assisted magnetic recording and reproduction by a near-field light. SOLUTION: An electromagnetic field generation element 1 generates a near-field light 15 on a conductor 13 by irradiating the conductor 13 with light 12, and also generates a magnetic field by means of a current 16 passing through the conductor 13. Here, the electromagnetic field generation element 1 includes a soft magnetic material 17 disposed perpendicular to the direction facing a magnetic recording medium 30 on which the near-field light 15 and a magnetic field are made to act relative to the conductor 13, and to the flow direction of the current 16.
