PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing partial whitening of an image carrier and change of surface property such as change of surface roughness thereof, and achieving stable image output free from density irregularity over a long term. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a cleaning brush 34 coming into contact with a surface of an intermediate transfer belt 16 to remove residual toner on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 16 and made of radial brush fibers, a collecting roller 35 collecting the residual toner collected by the cleaning brush 34, a bearing arm 38 bringing the cleaning brush 34 into contact with the intermediate transfer belt 16 or separating it therefrom, and a solid lubricant 39 coming into contact with the cleaning brush 34 when the cleaning brush 34 comes into contact with the intermediate transfer belt 16, and separated from the cleaning brush 34 when the cleaning brush 34 is separated from the intermediate transfer belt 16.
