PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric power steering system capable of previously avoiding generation of solenoid braking without causing power loss by a contact. SOLUTION: A CPU 15a determines whether or not at least any one of abnormality of, for example, a motor overcurrent, motor grounding or short-circuit between motor terminals is generated based on a terminal voltage of an electric motor 12, and when it is determined that the abnormality is generated, the CPU 15a determines that there is possibility that solenoid braking is generated. The CPU 15a makes an opening/closing switch 36 in the ON state when it is determined that there is possibility that solenoid braking is generated. Thereby, a current is fed to an electro-magnet 32 of a leaving device 31, a member 33 to be attracted is attracted to the electro-magnet 32 by magnetic force generated on the electro-magnet 32, and a brush 22 is left from a commutator 21 in resistant to urging force of a leaf spring 23.
