PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the user-friendliness with which to obtain information at a point near a route at which an enjoyable object is enjoyed. SOLUTION: An information providing method includes the steps of: (a) preparing route data containing a first type of information on a route and a second type of information on a surrounding area near the route that includes a point at which an enjoyable object is enjoyed; and (b) showing the route in accordance with the route data. The step (b) includes the steps of: (b1) showing the route in accordance with the first type of information; (b2) when the current location is near the surrounding area, introducing the surrounding area in accordance with the second type of information and prompting a user to request information on another area where the same enjoyable object is enjoyed as in the surrounding area; (b3) upon receiving a request for information, presenting an alternative area containing a point at which the same enjoyable object is enjoyed as in the surrounding area and overlapping with a second range near the current location; and (b4) in response to designation of an area selected from the surrounding area and the alternative area, providing information on a point in the selected area at which the enjoyable object can be enjoyed.
