PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable to improve formability of a porous layer of a heat-resistant polymer as well as to make its mechanical characteristics, heat resistance, and battery characteristics excellent, in obtaining a nonaqueous electrolyte battery separator by forming a heat-resistant porous layer made of a heat-resistant polymer in a wet coating method, on one or both faces of a base material such as a fine porous film. SOLUTION: Of the nonaqueous electrolyte battery separator provided with a base material mainly formed of thermosetting resin, having a pores or voids inside as well as a shutdown function, and a heat-resistant porous layer mainly formed of heat-resistant polymers and laminated on one or both faces of the base material, a molecular weight distribution Mw/Mn of the heat-resistant polymer satisfies 1<Mw/Mn<5, and that, a weight-average molecular weight Mw of the heat-resistant polymer is 8.0×10<SP>3</SP>to 1.0×10<SP>6</SP>. Therefore, a nonaqueous electrolyte battery separator excellent in battery characteristics, and especially, in safety can be obtained. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
