PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal detector which efficiently determines whether or not its detection operation is normal while inspecting a specimen. SOLUTION: The metal detector transfers a specimen by a specimen transfer path at first speed and transfers a test piece by a test piece transfer path at second speed, which is different from the first speed. The metal detector includes a specimen signal extraction section for extracting a specimen signal corresponding to the first speed from a reception signal and a test piece signal extraction section for extracting a test piece signal corresponding to the second speed from the reception signal. A processing section determines the presence or absence of metal mixed into the specimen on the basis of the specimen signal and detects test metal contained in the test piece on the basis of the test piece signal.
