PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator for a camera which is miniaturized and has a wide viewing angle, and achieves improvement in the degree of freedom in design. SOLUTION: The illuminator for the camera is provided with a second lens barrel 18 to advance/retreat on a stroboscope base 17. It is provided with a light emitting part 19 to move up and down between a position where the light emitting part 19 covers the second lens barrel 18 at a housing position from above and a position where it pops up relative to the stroboscope base 17. It is provided with an interlocking mechanism 84 receiving force from a driving source and interlocking advance/retreat operation of the second lens barrel 18 with up-and-down moving operation of the light emitting part 19. When the second lens barrel 18 is set at the housing position, the second lens barrel 18 is covered with the light emitting part 19 from above, thereby achieving miniaturization and improvement of the degree of freedom. By extending the second lens barrel 18 to a subject side and making the light emitting part 19 pop up at a position where it does not interfere with the second lens barrel 18, field of the second lens barrel 18 on an advance side can be secured to be wide, thereby achieving the wide viewing angle.
