PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass ceramic obtained by firing at a low temperature (800-1,000°C) and having high thermal expansion, high strength, and excellent chemical resistance and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The glass ceramic has quartz as a primary crystal and SrAl<SB>2</SB>Si<SB>2</SB>O<SB>8</SB>and Ba<SB>0.9</SB>Sr<SB>0.1</SB>Si<SB>2</SB>O<SB>8</SB>as secondary crystals, and having a relative density of 95% or higher, wherein the content of the quarts is 40 mass% or higher when measured by the Rietveld analysis as determined from peak intensities of X-ray diffraction, and the total content of SrAl<SB>2</SB>Si<SB>2</SB>O<SB>8</SB>and Ba<SB>0.9</SB>Sr<SB>0.1</SB>Si<SB>2</SB>O<SB>8</SB>is 20 mass% or higher.
