PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately predict inrush timing of a sheet-like member to a nip in a sheet-like member carrying device and an image forming apparatus adapted to carry the sheet-like member while holding it in the nip formed through an endless belt. SOLUTION: In the sheet-like member carrying device adapted to carry a sheet-like member 7 while holding it in a nip formed by pressing a support roller 2 having an endless belt 1 laid thereon into contact with a counter roller 6 opposed across the endless belt, a displacement information detection means 13 which detects a vertical displacement relative to the endless belt surface which is caused by contact of the sheet-like member is provided in a predetermined position where the endless belt is laid on the sheet-like member carrying directional upstream side from the nip.
