A separator, and an electrochemical device containing the separator are provided to improve the lifetime property and safety of an electrochemical device by introducing a porous coating layer. A separator comprises a porous substrate having a plurality of pores; and a porous coating layer which is coated on the at least one surface of the porous substrate and comprises a mixture of a plurality of inorganic material particles and a binder polymer. The binder polymer comprises a first polyvinylidene fluoride-based polymer having a solubility of 25 weight% or more to acetone at 35 °C; a second polyvinylidene fluoride-based polymer having a solubility of 10 weight% or less to acetone at 35 °C; and a polymer having a cyano group.
