An LED backlight system and a driving method thereof are provided to generate desired luminance according to each LED block by independently controlling brightness of the light generated from each LED block. By sensing the quantity of the light which is generated from at least one or more scheduled LED blocks among a plurality of LED blocks(100), a sensing unit(140) outputs the sensed result. A storage unit(150) stores pulse duty ratio data about a duty ratio of each LED driving pulse(120) required for generating the light having a plurality of scheduled luminances in each LED block. A duty ratio interpolation unit(160) interpolates the duty ratios of each LED driving pulse based on the pulse duty ratio data, correspondingly to the target luminance of each LED block.
