A multichannel audio encoding/decoding method and an apparatus thereof using a plurality of variable code table are provided to perform compression encoding of the multichannel audio by encoding the parameter of the multichannel audio adaptively. An apparatus encoding a multichannel audio selects a variable length code table used for encoding the multichannel audio of a predetermined frequency band(710). The multichannel audio of the fixed frequency band is encoded into the apparatus by using the selected first variable-length code table(720). The variable-length code table is a Huffman code table. The frequency band is set up based on a sub band.
