An optical disk type determining apparatus and method are provided to perform accurate discrimination irrespective of the limit switch fixed in an optical disk device by detecting a header signal in the rewritable region. An optical disk type determining method is as follows. In order to discriminate DVD-RAM and DVD-/+RW type, a header signal is detected from the rewritable region of an optical disk. If the header signal is detected, the type of the optical disk is determined as DVD-RAM. If not, the type of the optical disk is determined as DVD-/+RW.
