<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image forming apparatus where a contact type charging device is brought into contact with the surface of an image carrier driven to rotate so as to charge the image carrier, and where only a defective part caused on the surface of the image carrier due to contact with the contact type charging device is easily ground and removed. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus where the contact type charging device 12 is brought into contact with the surface of the image carrier 11 driven to rotate so as to charge the image carrier includes a defect detection means 30 for detecting the defective part caused on the surface of the image carrier due to the contact with the contact type charging device, and a grinding means 21 grinding and removing the defective part on the surface of the image carrier.
