PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a pattern recognition rate when recognizing the pattern of characters, images and voice, etc., for instance. SOLUTION: The pattern recognition device includes: an input part 21 for converting an input character pattern to a feature vector; a dictionary 27 for recognition storing standard recognition vectors (eigenvalues and eigenvectors); a feature extraction part 22 for determining a plurality of recognition vectors indicating the feature intrinsic to the character pattern to be compared with the recognition vector in the dictionary 27 for recognition from the feature vectors of the character converted by the input part 21; a recognition part 24 for comparing the plurality of recognition vectors with the recognition vector stored in the dictionary 27 for recognition to execute pattern recognition and determining a score indicating the matching degree by eigenvector; a reliability calculation part 23 for determining the reliability of the recognized result of a first-place candidate from the relation between the score of the first-place candidate and the score of a second-place candidate by eigenvector; and a vector selection part 25 for selecting the eigenvector whose reliability is equal to or more than a threshold from the result of reliability calculation and outputting it to the recognition part 24.
