PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a read error by making a reading range visible, to attain compactness and furthermore, and to automatically determine whether characters are written longitudinally or written laterally when a document image is the characters. SOLUTION: An image scanner includes an image reading unit 2 and a display unit 3 for displaying a document image F read by the document reading unit. The document reading unit 2 includes: a housing; a transparent document reading plate 5 provided to the lower surface of the housing 4; a transparent document see-through plate 6 provided to the upper surface of the housing 4; and an image sensor which reads the document image F over the document reading plate 5 while reciprocating between the document reading plate 5 and the document see-through plate 6. The display unit 3 includes a display screen 8 for displaying the document image F read by the document reading unit 2 so that a size is changed, the document reading unit 2 and the display unit 3 are linked to be foldable via a hinge unit 7, and the document see-through plate 6 and the display screen 8 are disposed on different surfaces at positions close to each other so that they are contrasted with each other.
