PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability of a liquid crystal display having an inorganic vapor deposition film used for an alignment layer. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display includes a pair of substrates 1 and 2 disposed oppositely to each other, a liquid crystal 3 held between both substrates and alignment layers 4 and 5 disposed on surfaces where respective substrates come into contact with the liquid crystal and giving a pre-tilt to the liquid crystal. The alignment layers 4 and 5 are constituted of inorganic vapor deposition films formed by obliquely vapor-depositing an inorganic substance from prescribed vapor deposition directions. One alignment layer 4 generates a normal pre-tilt state where the liquid crystal 3 is pre-tilted on the same side as the vapor deposition direction, and the other alignment layer 5 generates a reverse pre-tilt state where the liquid crystal 3 is pre-tilted in a direction opposite to the vapor deposition direction. The inorganic vapor deposition film includes properties such that pre-tilt changes with the passage of time. Change in the pre-tilt with time is canceled between both substrates 1 and 2, by setting the one alignment layer 4 and the other alignment layer 5 in the normal pre-tilt state and the reverse pre-tilt state, respectively.
