Provided is a highly convenient imaging device which can perform various processing by using an imaging element, while detecting a phase difference. An imaging unit (1) is provided with an imaging element (10), which is configured to convert light into electrical signals by photoelectric conversion and to pass through light; a phase difference detection unit (20), which receives light passed through the imaging element (10) and detects a phase difference; a focus lens group (72) for adjusting a focal position; and a body control section (5) which controls the imaging element (10) and adjusts the focal position by drive-controlling the focus lens group (72), based on at least detection results obtained from the phase difference detection unit. The body control section (5) performs focusing based on the detection results obtained from the phase difference detection unit (20), while the imaging element (10) is being exposed.
