<p>Detecting anaerobic microorganisms that are capable of degrading aromatic compounds comprises contacting an environmental sample with nucleotide sequences coding for a conserved amino acid sequence of 6-oxocyclohexene-1-carbonyl coenzyme A hydrolase, and detecting any hybridization.
