<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-contained disposable motor-driven loading unit for use with a surgical cutting and stapling instrument for use with it, in which power is supplied by a motor. <P>SOLUTION: The disposable loading unit may include a battery. The battery is held at a non-connection position when the disposable loading unit is not in use, and is moved to a connection position when the disposable loading unit is connected to the surgical cutting and stapling instrument, so that power is supplied to the motor selectively. An indicator is supported on the disposable loading unit, so that the times when an axial direction drive assembly of the disposable loading unit comes to a start position and an end position are indicated.
