The invention relates to a system for monitoring the fishing activity of trawling vessels. The invention includes a device for locating a vessel, disposed on a vessel provided with a net-shooting and -hauling winch, and winch motion sensors which detect when the vessel shoots and hauls nets. The invention also includes means for transmitting data from the location-determining device and the motion sensors to data reception means. The data includes essential information about the vessel being monitored and data relating to the position of the vessel and said data is transmitted to data reception means and stored in data storage means together with essential information about the vessel for subsequent analysis in order to detect possible offences involving fishing activity outside of permitted times or areas.
