PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens suitable for a video camera or an electronic still camera or the like using a solid imaging element or the like, especially, considering usage when arrangement place of the zoom lens is limited, and made extremely compact and achieving high image quality and high variable power, and to provide optical equipment equipped therewith. SOLUTION: The zoom lens having an optical element (optical path bending optical element) P bending an optical path includes a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power, a second lens group G2 having negative refractive power, a third lens group G3 having positive refractive power, a fourth lens group G4 having positive refractive power, and a fifth lens group G5 having negative refractive power, which are arranged in order from an object side along an optical axis. The fifth lens group G5 includes a plurality of lenses. When the focal length of the first lens group G1 is defined as fG1, the focal length of the lens entire system at a wide angle end is defined as fW, and the focal length of the lens entire system at a telephoto end is defined as fT, they satisfy a condition shown by following expression: 1.7<fG1/(fW×fT)<SP>(1/2)</SP><3.0.
