PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase learning accuracy of a sensor output by enabling correction and learning control of sensor output characteristics. SOLUTION: This variable valve gear is provided with a variable valve train capable of continuously changing operation angle of a valve according to rotational position of a control shaft, and a control shaft sensor detecting rotational angle of the control shaft. When prescribed learning permission conditions are satisfied, the rotational position of the control shaft is mechanically fixed at an intermediate lock position by an intermediate stopper (steps S12, S13), and sensor output at that time is recorded (step S14). After record of sensor outputs at two different intermediate lock positions is completed, sensor output characteristics are corrected by using the sensor outputs (steps S17, S18).
