PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform optimum combustion according to engine operating conditions using two types of fuels having octane numbers different from each other. SOLUTION: A spark plug 16 is disposed in the center of a top surface of a combustion chamber 1. A high octane fuel and a low octane fuel are separately supplied from a fuel injection valve 15 disposed in the center of the top surface of the combustion chamber 1 so as to distribute the high octane fuel and the low octane fuel to different areas in the combustion chamber 1 (that is, on the center side and a surrounding side therein), while switching locations of the distributed fuels according to engine load. More specifically, at a low load, the high octane fuel is distributed to the center side in the combustion chamber, and the low octane fuel is distributed to the surrounding side therein. This allows ignition (combustion) to start from the high octane fuel. Meanwhile, at a high load, the low octane fuel is distributed to the center side in the combustion chamber, and the high octane fuel is distributed to the surrounding side therein.
