PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gripping device and method for setting the size of a gripping opening correctly and performing stable gripping operation. SOLUTION: This gripping device is provided with: a gripping mechanism controlling part 117 for feeding operation control values to a gripping unit to control operation of the gripping unit; an image processing part 112 for computing the size of the gripping opening formed by a gripping member; a calibration data generating part 113 for generating the calibration data indicating the relationship of the size of the gripping opening to operation control values based on the size of the gripping opening computed in the image processing part 112 for a plurality of operation control values; a data storing part 116 for storing the calibration data; and a device controlling part 115 for generating operation control value data for the gripping unit based on the calibration data stored in the data storing part 116 and feeding the operation control value data into the gripping mechanism controlling part 117.
