The method involves providing a manually or automatically activatable block function for protecting data in an infotainment system of a vehicle. The manual activation of the block function is carried out by pressing of a softkey button (12), or buttons combination and/or by a voice command. A sub-function (13) e.g. playing of MPEG-1 audio layer-3music, of the infotainment system is not usable, if the block function is activated. The automatic activation is carried out after a preset time period of inactivity, or stopping of an engine of the vehicle, and/or leaving the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle key comprising a security module for activating and deactivating an immobilizer system.
