A system and methods for detecting abnormalities in a rotating device comprises a rotor 150 and stator 140 of the device, each comprising a plurality of windings 160, 170, with an air gap existing between the rotor and the stator. An air gap flux probe 130 is positioned in the air gap to measure the magnetic flux density generated in the air gap during operation of the device. An analyzer 200 is placed in electrical communication with the probe to receive its output. A high-impedance grounding circuit 210 is at least temporarily connected between the rotor and a ground while the device is in operation. The flux density is measured while the grounding circuit is connected. Analysis of the probe output, by comparing to a baseline measurement in one embodiment, determines if an abnormality exists. The location of the abnormality may be pinpointed by the system. The abnormalities detected may be a shorted field winding, or a rotor ground fault.
|
