A battery module including a housing, a lower tray and multiple cells is disclosed. The lower tray may be configured to receive multiple cells and located inside the housing adjacent a bottom of the housing, the lower tray having a top side and a bottom side, the top side having multiple sockets configured to receive the multiple cells in a closely packed arrangement, the bottom side configured to define a chamber between the lower tray and the bottom of the housing, the chamber configured to receive released gas from the plurality of cells.
