PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new terminal-modified imide oligomer excellent in solubility in organic solvents, preservation stability of solutions and moldability such as low melt viscosity, and giving a cured product having high heat resistance and mechanical properties such as an elastic modulus, tensile strength and elongation, and to provide varnish and a cured product thereof. SOLUTION: The soluble terminal-modified imide oligomer is expressed by general formula (1). In the formula, R<SB>1</SB>represents a bivalent aromatic diamine residue; R<SB>2</SB>represents a tetravalent aromatic tetracarboxylic acid residue, m and n satisfy relationships of m≥1, n≥0, 1≤m+n≤20 and 0.05≤m/(m+n)≤1, and the sequence of repeating units may be a block type or a random type.
