PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element having a birefringent pattern with which a latent image is clearly visualized as an image including colors other than white and black by observing the latent image via a polarizing plate. SOLUTION: The optical element includes two or more pixels, and includes two or more optically anisotropic layers. Slow axes in the respective optically anisotropic layers are uniformly oriented. Each pixel includes two or more subpixels. The subpixel includes partial regions of the respective optically anisotropic layers. The retardations in the partial regions of the respective layers are uniform, and either one subpixel and any other one subpixel in the same pixel or in the other pixel exhibit colors different from each other when observed via the polarizing plate from a direction normal to the optically anisotropic layers.
