Method for operating a processing machine having a tool (4) with a tool shaft comprises measuring the deflection directly on the tool shaft in a contact-less manner. An independent claim is also included for a tool holder inserted into the processing machine for holding a measuring unit. Preferred Features: The deflection is carried out using a pair of opposite-lying sensors (12a-12d) between which is arranged the tool shaft. Signals from the sensors are subtracted fro each other to determine the deflection. A sensor support (9) supports the sensors and partially surrounds the tool shaft.
