PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and an image density control method with which characteristic information such as development γ is accurately obtained with a small number of toner patches when the development γ is not largely varied from the previous value, and two or more toner patches are put within a detection range of an optical detection means by forming a gradation pattern once even when the development γ is much larger than the previous value. SOLUTION: One toner patch of the gradation pattern is formed with fixed developing bias determined in advance so that it may be sure to be within the detection range of an optical sensor in the variation range of the development γ, and remaining toner patches are formed with developing bias set so that they are equally dispersed within the detection range of the optical sensor on the basis of the developing bias determined by previous process control.
