PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an exhaust gas property even in an excessive response of easily deteriorating the exhaust gas property, by highly accurately performingλcontrol, by successively calculating a gas constant used for calculating an air supply quantity, from a measuring result of the air excessive ratioλand various parameters of a pre-cycle. SOLUTION: This method is provided for controlling the air excessive ratioλof an engine 1 constituted so as to recirculate a part of exhaust gas to the intake side of a cylinder, and calculates the air excessive ratioλof the pre-cycle from a specification, an operation condition, the suction air volume and a fuel flow rate Gf of the engine 1, and calculates the gas constant R of mixed gas (a+e<SB>1</SB>) including recirculation gas e<SB>1</SB>sucked in the cylinder 2 from the air excessive ratio, and calculates the air excessive ratioλof a present cycle by using the gas constant R, and makes a control so as to approach the air excessive ratioλof the present cycle to the target air excessive ratio introduced from a preset target air excessive ratio map M.
