PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve durability of an element comprising a pillar part, to which the pinching pressure is applied as a bending load, by restricting concentration of stress. SOLUTION: These elements of a belt for a continuously variable transmission are annularly arranged by aligning attitude thereof, and bundled by a ring 8 arranged to be inserted into a saddle surface 9 formed in a central part in the width direction and the height direction, and pillar parts 10a, which are brought in contact with the inner surface 15 of a wraparound groove 14 of a pulley 13, are formed in both side parts of the saddle surface 9 so as to be extended in the vertical direction. This element has a side surface 12 for receiving the pinching pressure in contact with the inner surface 15 of the wraparound groove 14, and the side surface 12 is formed with multiple fine recessed parts 16 for holding lubricant, and a coefficient of stress concentration in a part of the side surface 12 corresponding to the root of the pillar part 10a is set smaller than a coefficient of stress concentration in other parts of the side surface 12.
