A method and apparatus for facilitating erection of a drilling rig com prising a substructure (18), a mast (20) movably connected to the substructure (18), a drawworks apparatus (30) with cables (31, 32, 33) for raising and lowering the mast (20), a drawworks control system (CS) for controlling the drawworks apparatus (20) as the mast (20) is raised or lowered, characterised in that the method comprises the step of controlling the raising and lowering of the mast (20) with a remote control system (A), such that an operator can walk around with the remote control system (A).
