Polymers and copolymers containing vinyl chloride as their principal constituent are stabilized by adding a mixture of zinc stearate and an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal stearate. Specified copolymers are those of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, vinylidene chloride, an alkyl maleate and an alkyl fumarate. Preferred proportions of both stearates are from 5 to 10 per cent by weight. Specified stearates are those of potassium, sodium, calcium, strontium, barium and magnesium. Plasticizers may be present. In examples zinc stearate together with barium stearate are used to stabilize dibutyl phthalate and (3) and (4) vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer; (5) vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer and (6) polyvinyl chloride. Examples also disclose compositions containing vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, dibutyl phthalate and (1) zinc stearate; (2) barium stearate. Specification 584,434 is referred to. |
