PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a receiver that can achieve a sufficiently long communication distance with respect to a reception side on condition that a general transmitter/receiver is used. SOLUTION: An infrared communication instrument 100 has a reverse bias voltage applying means 172 of applying a reverse bias voltage having a predetermined voltage value VR to photodetectors 101A and 101B. The photodetectors 101A and 101B have their bonding area set according to the voltage value of the reverse bias voltage applied from the reverse bias voltage applying means 172.
