PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a cellulose or chitin fine fiber by swelling and fibrillating cellulose or chitin using a solvent containing an ionic liquid. SOLUTION: Fine cellulose or chitin fiber is produced by swelling and fibrillating cellulose or chitin using a solvent containing an ionic liquid. The production method is simple, and efficient and suitable for a wide variety of polysaccharides. It has been found that the obtained fine fiber keeps the original length of the fiber raw material.
