PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which achieves higher speed, detects the position of an endless belt member in a main scanning direction with a simple structure, and surely controls it, and prevents image distortion or color slippage. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a belt position detection means for detecting the position of the endless belt member in the main scanning direction by sequentially detecting the position in the main scanning direction of a plurality of detection marks which are formed on the endless belt member; a displacement detection means in belt main scanning direction for sequentially detecting displacement in the main scanning direction of the detection marks on the endless belt member due to belt conveyance of prescribed intervals; a belt position adjusting means for adjusting the position in the main scanning direction of the endless belt member on the basis of information of the position in the main scanning direction which is detected by the belt position detection means; and a latent image forming position correction means for correcting a latent image forming position in the main scanning direction on an image carrier on the basis of the information of the displacement in the main scanning direction which is detected by the belt displacement detection means. The displacement detection means in the belt main scanning direction is arranged within a plane transferring a visible image on the image carrier among the belt plane sections among a plurality of conveying rollers.
