An apparatus for the manufacture of nanoparticles, such as core/shell semiconductor nanoparticles (quantum dots) which comprises a solvent preparation module and a particle synthesis module where the particle synthesis module comprises three sequential, independently heated chambers which may be a precursor solution preheating chamber fed by the solvent preparation module, a nucleation chamber and a particle growth chamber. There may be further heated chambers to form shell layers on the core particle formed in the above apparatus. There may be particle sampling and particle characterisation devices such as absorption emission spectrometry, x-ray crystallography, light scattering and NMR spectrometry. The apparatus allows for the nucleation and growth of nanoparticles at independent temperatures. The independent temperatures allow for the growth of nanoparticles in a controlled environment avoiding spontaneous nucleation and allowing particle sizes to be controlled and facilitating the manufacture of particles of a substantially uniform size. Furthermore the apparatus allows for the manufacture of core-shell nanoparticles and core-shell-shell nanoparticles. Also disclosed is a method of manufacture of nanoparticles.
|
