A method for updating presence information of a mobile communication terminal based on the IMS and a system thereof are provided to reduce the network traffic, thereby improving the system performance. A service management server(110) requests the update of presence information of a mobile communication terminal. A presence information management server(120) determines whether the terminal is connected to a network. If the terminal is not connected to the network, the presence information management server updates the presence information of the mobile communication terminal.
