The method involves stopping and releasing stop of a thermal engine part (2) based on motor vehicle speed information, slope information supporting a motor vehicle i.e. hybrid vehicle (1), and electric energy information available from an electric energy storage unit i.e. battery (22). Maximum duration for maintaining hybrid propulsion i.e. power train (7), is determined by a single electric motor part (3) based on the speed, slope and electric energy information. The maximum duration is compared with a temporal range in a manner to stop and release the stop of the thermal engine part. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling hybrid propulsion of a motor vehicle.
