PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an opposite substrate preventing a decrease in display quality due to a gap defect caused by irregularity in height of a spacer, and a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: On the opposite substrate 1, frame light shield portions 3 formed on a glass substrate 2, section light shield portions 4, and a plurality of display cells as regions each including a colored layer, an OC layer, and a columnar spacer and enclosed with the frame light shield portion 3, are arranged. Display cells A and B each has: a region C which is an outer peripheral part and includes the outermost pixel where the display cells A and B are adjacent to each other and its periphery; the region A as an outer peripheral part other than that of the region C; and a region B which is an inner peripheral part and includes a plurality of pixels 7. The occupation area of tall columnar spacers per unit area in a region where the tall columnar spacers are arranged is made small, and the occupation area of short columnar spacers per unit area in a region where the short columnar spacers are arranged is made large to control a crushing amount in seal baking, thereby making gaps uniform.
