PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring system and monitoring method to reliably determine presence at home or absence of a monitoring object person. SOLUTION: A home server 6 determines the monitoring object person's state (presence at home, absence, abnormalities, etc.) according to the detection results of human detection sensors 1-1 to 1-n, the state (locked/unlocked) of an electric lock 2, and the operating state records of household appliances (sensors) 3-1 to 3-n. An SNS server 13 analyzes description contents on diary information or schedule information by a description information analysis tool 11, analyzes access records, and determines the monitoring object person's state (presence at home, absence). Furthermore, the home server 6 determines the final presence state at home and safety based on the analysis result by the SNS server 13 in addition to the above determination result.
